■ MARPOL (Prevention of Pollution from Ships), 1973/78
정식 명칭은 International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as modified by the Protocol of 1978 relating thereto (MARPOL 73/78) 이며, 해상오염방지협약 이라고 불린다.
MARPOL 은 선박에 의한 해양오염을 방지하기 위한 국제 협약으로 1973년과 1978년의 조약을 근간으로 지속적으로 개정되어 왔다.
1973년의 MARPOL 조약은 기름(Oil), 화학제품(Chemical), 포장된 상태의 유해물질(Harmfl Substances in packaged form), 쓰레기(Garbage)와 오수(Sewage)에 의한 오염에 대하여 규정하였다.
1978년의 조약에서는 그 당시 발생하였던 일련의 사고들에 대한 대책으로 유조선의 안전과 오염방지를 위해 밸러스트의 분리(Segregated Ballast) 요건을 강화하는 내용을 채택하였다.
1973년 조약이 아직 발효되기 전에 1978년 조약이 채택되었으므로, 이 두조약은 하나로 흡수되어 MARPOL 73/78 로 불리게 되었다.
